Seeking Release of People Imprisoned by ICE in Louisiana: A Training for Louisiana Lawyers

  • The Pro Bono Project 615 Baronne St, Suite 203 New Orleans, LA 70113 USA (map)

Seeking Release of People Imprisoned by ICE in Louisiana: This free, one-hour virtual CLE, hosted by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative (SIFI) and The Pro Bono Project (PBP) will train volunteer attorneys to provide pro bono representation to people detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Louisiana. Since 2019, the population of migrants detained in ICE custody has dramatically grown to become second only to Texas. People detained in ICE detention facilities continue to experience inhumane, harmful conditions, including solitary confinement and lack of access to medical and mental health treatment. Participants will learn about the history and current policies related to ICE detention, the various government agencies involved, and how to advocate for the release of migrants—specifically by filing parole requests and other similar requests for release. Attorneys who choose to volunteer after attending the CLE will be assigned a case and provided with ongoing support and mentoring.
